Alison Scarpulla is a familiar name on the blog (she’s been featured here a couple times already), and her continuously amazing photographic explorations signal her name will come up again in the future.

This cloud series is particularly sublime, and somehow flows with the rest of Alison’s darkened and mysterious works, while widening the gaze into post-apocalyptic dreamscapes.

Dark Black & White Photography by Paul Phung

I can’t believe last time Paul Phung’s photos were on Art Sponge was back in 2009… In any case his photography has definitely grown nicely since, and although I’d love to show all of his great work, I chose to feature the rather darker side to his monochrome shots. Paul’s grainy and highly contrasted shots are delicately composed and seem to explore the minimalist ideal of less is more within portraiture.

This is an amazing example of dedication to hand-work and D.I.Y in an overwhelmingly virtual and automatized world. Ian Ruhter is traveling through the US in a van he had turned into a massive wet-plate camera. Watch the beautiful short documentary below, explaining the sacrifices Ian has made in order to realize this high-risk project – every photograph is a project in itself, with all sorts of elements potentially ruining it. However when Ian succeeds in capturing the shot, the results are magnificent.

Apologies for the down-time recently – although I wouldn’t consider myself an extreme case of lazyholic, I do relapse into serious laziness on occasion (speaking of lazy, check out Recovering Lazyholic – Erin Hudson might be lazy but she blogs awesome stuff and her work is great too).

While visiting the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin yesterday I came across a beautiful book featuring artists who graduated from the Helsinki School – entitled a female view. Nanna Hänninen is one of those artists and I love what she did on this project.
