“I imagined that these creatures exist in some other universe, that they roam wild somewhere, like lions or giraffes in Africa. I am simply capturing them in their natural habitats. Then again, I sometimes imagine that these hyperbeasts exist in our own world at some hidden level. They could exist, hidden to us in the same way that atomic and subatomic particles used to be hidden. These creatures could be a part of our world, dancing and living in the same spaces where we exist.”

These are images taken from various series of photographs by Uwe Schramm, a German art director, designer and photographer. With an established career in as art director in advertising agencies, Schramm obviously has an amazing skill for framing visual ideas and flipping normalized perspectives upside down. I’m constantly taken by the strangeness, humoristic and sometimes disturbing approach his work takes.

“I probably exist in a different realm than most people but I think it is undeniable that ‘the darker sides and forces of our nature’ are much more interesting to study than what creates a rainbow, for example. Everyone is different though I suppose, and I’m sure some people like to insulate themselves and refuse to believe in the existence of, lets call it the “dark side”… maybe its simply that I take different drugs than they do. I’m also a pretty cold-hearted son of a bitch; Byron is more eloquent “Bereft of tears I inward turned to stone.” Pretty pictures of puppies and landscapes do not move me. I also find that things that are initially beautiful do not have lasting power for me and it is the things which one must spend time with, learn, study, be allowed to grow on you that have staying power.”

Strange and fascinating work by Nico Krijno, from South Africa.

“Nico Krijno started taking photos at a very young age while growing up in a small town in the South African semi desert, before venturing to Cape Town to pursue his career in photography and film, using commercial, fashion & architectural commissions to support an independent, fine-art practice. Krijno’s subject matter is wildly eclectic; sausages and carrots on a blindingly bright tropical shirt or a schoolgirl holding a snake sit alongside one of several portraits of his muse and girlfriend Mignonne. His photographs are at once hyperreal and otherworldly, with humour, sexual innuendo and surreality present in equal measure. Raw as well as magical, the work contains a dirty realism he is beginning to make his own. His first solo show, ‘On How To Fill Those Gaps’ in late 2011 – and the accompanying self published book – was widely lauded and selected works has since been included in group shows in Edinburgh, Milan, Los Angeles and Glasgow & London. He was nominated for the Paul Huf Award 2013.”
